"Dinosaurs
in the Hood" is a very funny poem by Danez Smith. The poem is
about different movies, and the dinosaurs. The reason behind picking
this poem is that I like movies, and I have watched almost all the
movies that Smith have mentioned in this poem. I chose the title No
One Kills the Black Boy because that black boy is the main
character of this poem. Smith wants to put the scene on every movies
where the black boy is playing, and there are dinosaurs.
He
starts the poem by mentioning the movies Jurassic park, Friday, and
The Pursuit of Happyness. I have watched all these movies; Friday,
The Pursuit of Happyness has a story of black people. He says that
those movies should have a scene where a little black boy is playing
with a toy dinosaur on a bus, and he sees T. Rex outside the windows.
He says don't let Quentin Tarantino to direct this movie because it
has to be very different than the one he makes. Some of the famous
movies by Tarantino are Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill. In this movie, Smith
wants the boy to play with guns, and remember his father's picture.
He thinks that most of the black kids have gun as a toy. But later he
decides to not put any of those scenes, and just give Brontosaurus or
Triceratop to that boy. And this is just a reminder of a Santa or God
that they still exits. He does not want any resist things on this
movie. He says lets not have any stereo type scene on this movie. He
does not want Wayans brothers in this movie. He does not want Will
Smith or Sofia Vergara either. He wants this movie to be about the
local folks, children of slaves, immigrants. He just want an old grandma shooting raptors with the gun they hid under the mattress. He
wants a black kid to get the blooded neck of the dinosaur.
He
wants black casts in the movie, but he insist that this can not be
the black movie. He does not want this movie to be a metaphor for
black people and extinction. He does not want any racial involvement
in this movie. He does not want to show any black pain or struggles
that black people face. He does not want to show any slavery. He says
that if no one can say N word in the public then no body can use the
N word in this movie, and it has to be completely out of the racism.
He does not want any cheap jokes, specially chicken jokes in the
movie. He says that no body dies in the movie, specially the black
boy. He says three times that 'no one kills the black boy'. He wants
to make this first scene because he wants to show the black boy with
the dinosaurs. He wants to show to the public the dreams, endless
possibilities that black boy has.
When
I started reading this poem, I found it very funny. This poem is not
only funny, but also very emotional. Poet Smith has done a great job
writing this poem. Through this poem he wants to show that black kids
do not deserve guns as toys, they should also play with the
dinosaurs.
